Elaine Terner, President
Are you fighting through a disability yourself or do you have a family who has a disability or maybe someone you know is facing a challenge? I can help. Through my long experience as the mother of a 35 year old son with Autism and my contact over the years with other disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, MS, Amputees, accident victims, stroke and many others, I have the ability to bring about transformation in these people’s lives. My life situation is what led to the founding of Exceptional Designs.

My educational background includes the study in Elementary Education at Lesley College n/k/a Lesley University, a Diploma in Residential Design from Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and Certification in Assistive Technology. This education gave me the tools I needed to found Exceptional Designs.

I observed that the physical home environment has a direct influence on mood and behavior. A positive result is achieved through a calming color scheme, furniture design and the inclusion of sensory accessories. I am able to determine the appropriate choices to create “home sweet home”.

Redesigning my son’s room, was the foundation for his transformation. I added a TV and VCR to play tapes of his favorite martial arts movies. They drew his attention which caused awareness to what was happening on the screen and then to what was happening in the world around him. Next he started imitating the movements and sounds which led to speech.

Today he is verbal and loves to be with people receiving their love and attention. I can create the same results with you, a family member or someone you know. Whatever the case may be, I can create a customized environment for that person’s specific needs.
I look forward to being of service to people with special needs and enhancing the quality of their lives. When a person is content in his environment, he is more receptive to the educational and therapeutic interventions necessary for him to progress and he is easier on caregivers and other family members.
